    How to read the ratings

    Ratings run A (excellent) through D (not recommended) to X (do not use), with temperature qualifiers: a material rated A at 30 °C may degrade to B or C at 90 °C. For HCl, PTFE and PFA rate A at all concentrations up to their temperature limits; PP is fair and swells above 30 %; SS316 pits. For NaOH, PP and SS316 work well; FKM fails hot. For hypochlorite, PTFE and EPDM lead.

    The selector applies the temperature qualifier automatically and flags materials whose limit you have passed.

    The pump family follows the material

    Material and pump type go together: PTFE and PFA point to PTFE centrifugal pumps or PFA-lined builds with magnetic drive or PTFE bellows seals; PP points to PP centrifugal and mag-drive pumps; SS316 suits clean, dairy and moderate chemical duties. The selector’s recommendation line maps the top-rated materials to the pump family that uses them.

    Elastomers and gaskets matter as much as the casing — the table rates EPDM, FKM and PTFE-lined separately so rebuilds use the right spare parts.

    Q1.What material is best for HCl?

    PTFE and PFA rate excellent for HCl at all concentrations up to about 180–200 °C. PP is fair below 30 % and 60 °C, SS316 is risky (pitting), and FKM elastomers degrade — use PTFE bellows or EPDM. PFA-lined and PTFE pumps are the standard HCl build.

    Q2.Can polypropylene handle acids?

    PP handles many acids at moderate concentration and temperature — fair for HCl under 30 % and 60 °C, good for caustic, poor for strong oxidizers like concentrated hypochlorite and hot H₂SO₄. Always check concentration and temperature, not just the chemical name.

    Q3.What does rating X mean?

    X means do not use — the material fails rapidly in that chemical, such as FKM in HCl or SS304 in hot hypochlorite. Ratings D mean not recommended for service, with corrosion expected over time. A and B are serviceable; C needs caution and frequent inspection.

    Q4.Why does temperature change the rating?

    Corrosion and swelling accelerate with temperature, and polymer limits are absolute: PP softens and swells near 80–100 °C, PVDF stress-cracks in hot caustic, and stainless pitting worsens above about 50–60 °C in chloride service. The selector degrades ratings past the material’s limit.

    Q5.PTFE or PFA for my pump?

    Both rate excellent for almost every chemical. PTFE (GFPTFE) is the standard wetted material for Teflow centrifugal pumps; PFA is preferred where lining integrity, smoothness and slightly higher temperature tolerance matter, and for mag-drive builds.
