Choosing the pump family
The decision order
Five questions decide the family: is it a dosing duty? Does the liquid carry solids? Is viscosity high? Must leakage be zero? Is temperature beyond PP limits? The wizard applies them in that order, so a hazardous dosing duty lands on a diaphragm pump with the right wet-end, and a clean acid transfer lands on a magnetic drive.
Every rule is a typical envelope, not a law: viscosity above ~200 cSt favors PD, solids above ~5 % rule out magnetic drive, and any hazardous duty favors sealless.
The families
Centrifugal: high flow, low viscosity, lowest cost per m³ — the workhorse for chemical transfer with PTFE, PP or SS wetted parts. Magnetic drive: the same hydraulics without a shaft seal — for acids and solvents where leakage is unacceptable. Diaphragm: metering accuracy for dosing, tolerant of solids. Peristaltic: the gentle, solids-proof choice for slurry, polymer and shear-sensitive liquids.

Q1.Centrifugal or positive displacement pump?
Centrifugal pumps move high volumes of low-viscosity liquid economically; positive-displacement pumps deliver fixed flow regardless of pressure and handle viscous and solids-bearing liquids. The selector picks by viscosity, solids and duty: clean low-viscosity → centrifugal, thick or solids-heavy → PD.
Q2.When is a magnetic drive pump the right choice?
When leakage is unacceptable — hazardous, toxic or valuable chemicals. The sealless design removes the shaft seal entirely. Constraints: clean liquids only (no hard solids), no dry running, and temperature limits (PP ~80 °C, PFA higher).
Q3.What pump handles solids?
Diaphragm and peristaltic pumps handle solids well; open-impeller centrifugal pumps handle moderate solids at higher flow. Magnetic drive pumps cannot take hard solids — internal bushings fail. Above ~5 % solids the selector steers away from sealless designs.
Q4.Which pump for chemical dosing?
Diaphragm dosing pumps — metering accuracy around ±1 %, leak-tight heads, and wetted parts matched to the chemical (PTFE/EPDM for hypochlorite, PP/EPDM for caustic). Peristaltic is the alternative for polymer and abrasive slurries.
Q5.Can one pump do everything?
No — and trying is where plants overspend. A pump sized for the worst case runs inefficiently everywhere else. Pick the family for the dominant duty and, where duties differ wildly, run two pumps. The selector and sizing tools make the trade-off explicit.
