    ETP Pump Sizing Calculator

Size effluent treatment plant pumps from influent flow, lift, friction and discharge head. The calculator applies the ETP design-flow factor, returns TDH, power and the IS motor frame, with material and solids guidance for effluent duties.

    ETP pump sizing explained

    1

Design flow is not influent flow

ETP pumps are sized for the design flow, which includes recirculation, equalization and peak factors — commonly 1.5–2.5× the average influent. This calculator applies a 2× factor to the influent you enter, which covers equalization recirculation in most Indian ETP designs. Adjust the factor for your specific scheme.

Pump selection also considers duty/standby pairs: two pumps at 50 % design flow each, one on duty, is the standard arrangement for reliability.

    2

    Head components

TDH = static lift + friction + discharge head. Static lift is the height from the sump water level to the discharge point; friction covers the transfer line, bends and valves; discharge head is any pressure at the outlet, such as a filter feed. The calculator sums them and sizes the pump at the design flow.

For sumps with solids, the suction arrangement matters as much as the pump: keep the suction bell clear of the floor, and size the suction line for 0.6–1.5 m/s so solids stay suspended.

    3

    Materials and solids

Clean effluent at neutral pH suits PP or SS316 pumps. Acidic or high-TDS effluent needs PP, PTFE-lined or SS316 with the right seal — the compatibility matrix is the guide. Effluent with suspended solids needs open-impeller or slurry-type pumps with hardened parts; see the slurry sizing tool. Frequently Asked Questions

    Technical & Operational FAQs

Q1.How do I size an ETP pump?

Design flow = influent × 1.5–2.5 (recirculation/peak factor). TDH = lift + friction + discharge head. Then power = design flow × TDH × SG ÷ (367 × efficiency), rounded to the IS motor frame. The calculator applies a 2× factor and does the head and power math.

Q2.What is the design flow factor for ETP?

Common practice is 1.5–2.5× the average influent, depending on recirculation, equalization tank capacity and peak discharge. This calculator uses 2×; adjust your input if your scheme differs.

    Q3.Which pump material for effluent?

Neutral clean effluent: PP or SS316. Acidic or salty effluent: PP, PTFE-lined or SS316 with compatible seals. Solids-bearing effluent: open-impeller or slurry-type with hardened wear parts. Check the chemical compatibility matrix for your specific effluent.

Q4.Do ETP pumps need duty and standby?

Yes — the standard arrangement is two pumps at 50 % design flow each, alternating duty, so a failure or maintenance stop never halts the plant. Some designs add a third for peak flows.

Q5.Why does my ETP pump clog?

Usually the suction arrangement or pump type: a too-small suction line drops velocity and lets solids settle, and closed impellers clog on fibrous or sticky solids. Open-impeller or non-clog pumps with correctly sized suction lines fix most cases.
